Leeds Art Gallery, 21st February 2pm

I do apologies for not getting the notice of the next sketchers meet up sooner, I have been quite busy over the last week.

I also mentioned, last time, that I had some news about what is happening with the Leeds Sketchers Group, again I apologies for not posting it sooner.

Firstly, we will be meeting next, outside the Leeds City Art Gallery on the 21st of February at the usual time of 2pm. I will be outside with my sketchbook under the arm. Those of you, who who RSVP on facebook, if you are not coming, then please change your rsvp. I will only wait 5 minutes for late stragglers

Now onto the news. This will in fact be the last Leeds Sketchers meet I will be arranging. After this, I will be arranging Leeds Savage Sketchers meets;

I've mentioned before, that I am involved in the running of the Leeds writers group. You can find some of my prose here:

It's a great group and, for sometime we have been looking to formalise the group into a society and expand out. Where Sarah, handed over the reigns of the sketching group, this was perfect timing.

There used to be in Leeds, a society called the Leeds Savage Club, which existed from 1898 - 1911. From their original constitution, which Leeds Museum have very kindly let me have a scan of, they were formed with the following objective.

The Object of the Club shall be to develop and foster the true spirit of Bohemisanism, social and congenial good - felllowship, and encourage good Music, Art , Literally and Kindred subjects.

On February 28th, Myself and others will be formalising the constitution to relaunch this society with a similar aim. So what does that exactly mean ?

First off, there will be LeedsSavage.com. Which will be our website, and on there, amongst other things, will be a forum where you will be able to chat, exchange ideas, and show off your work. We will also be keeping an up to date calendar of events and opportunities in Leeds, which members can contribute to.

With the weight of being a constitutional society, I am hoping to push open some doors, to some places which are normally closed. I am also hoping to use this weight, to get members discounts for things such as art materials.

Finally, as well as the sketching and writers meetings, there will be some social events also arranged., along side, other events of interest.

As you can imagine, their is a fair amount of work going into the setting of this up, also to point out, there will be an annual membership fee of £20, or a pay £1 to attend an event. Which is nothing when you think about it The money, will be used to keep the society running as a non-profit organisation (membership also gives you a vote into the running, I should also point) i I am extremely excited by it, and I hope it to be an opportunity to be apart of Leeds.

I've mentioned that we are signing the constitution on th 28th, and the date the website is going live, is the 3rd of March. The first Leeds Savages Sketch meetup will be on the 7th of March.

Group Reboot - Meeting Sunday 31st January 2pm

Hi All,

I know this group hasn't been active in sometime, and those of you who got Sarah's email, will know that she is back in Ireland. So, I am stepping forward and taking up the reigns and hoping to get some life back in to this group.

To kick things off, there will be a meet next Sunday the 31st of January at 2pm, the meeting place is outside Leeds City Museum. I will be there with my sketchpad under my arm. Draw for an hour and then a beer/coffee afterwards so we can discuss not just the drawings, but what everyone would like from a sketching group.

I am an assistant organiser for the Leeds writing group, and they are about to make some pretty exciting changes to what they offer. As Im involved in setting up their new sites , we maybe be able to piggy back some stuff from there. (message boards, file sections, calendars, etc) watch this space.

I am also keen to organise some life drawing sessions as well.

I hope to see you on that sunday, for me personally, I am looking forward to giving the Megaloceros giganteus, another stab. Here is my effort from last time

FAQ on how to use the blog

1) Become an author of the blog, I sent some of you out an invite already (let me know if you want me to send another one)..

so far Myself, Aiden, Rose, Chance, Sarah Preston and Louise can make posts

2) Click on create post (top right of blog) in light blue writting

3) Give the post a title and add text as required

4) to add your pictures there is a small icon with a picture on it on the top right, click on it.
Select brownse and select the file on your computer or the link (if you have it on the internet)

5)click add another picture if you want more then one picture

6) select upload...then hit okay when it finishes uploading (small files take quicker)

7) click publish post..

8) you can edit it if you´ve made a mistake..

HI everyone,

We are meeting at the city museum off Headrow road on the 15th of February. http://www.leeds.gov.uk/cityMuseum/

Its a great chance to make some friends and to develop your work as an artist..

The format of the day will be the same as the last day..everyone body sketches whatever they like and then we discuss our work over coffee / tea. If anyone wants to organise related sketching/ social events for the group let me know eg. a cinema outing/ day event.

To kick things off I propose a meeting at the art gallery (beside town hall) Sunday week at 2pm (just inside the entrance).

If everyone could have their sketching pads out so we can recognise you and if your late look for people drawing.

We can then get a coffee after and discuss our work and ways to help the group grow.

Some FAQ´s for all artists

After the success of the sketching group I set up in Dublin (http://dublinsketchers.blogspot.com ) Iv decided to set up a similar group in Leeds (my new home!).

I hope to create an informal amateur sketchers group to allow fellow artists to share ideas about their work and to meet new people.

The sketchers group will have no fixed abode apart from Leeds City and each member will provide their own art materials/ take a part in organising places to visit/ sketch on a rotational basis to be decided at monthly coffee meeting or sketching(2nd Thursday of every month).

The idea being we don't actually have pay to be a member of an art group but will still gain ideas from working in a group.

The idea is mainly for quick sketches using mainly pencil/ charcoal, but Pastels/ experimentation is always welcome- although the group will hopefully grow and develop, and be open to changes.

The secound idea is that we meet once a week, and sketch for about an hour or two with the option of discussing our work after over coffee.

Sunday are great for me but with the brighter evenings we could do it in the evening time during weekdays too just remember we might have to pick spots indoors to avoid the cold until it gets warmer!
we also hope to organise sketching weekends away (eg staying in hostels/ renting a house) for down the country.
we also hope to have an annual exhibition and we welcome and encourage anyone with any good suggestions to participate at our monthly coffee meetings to help decide on the running of the group.

Ideas for intial sketching venues are : history museams/ art Gallery´s/ the bus or train station/ coffee or tea house/ scuplture gardens/ the royal armoury/ festivals/ parks etc..

Of course a camera can be used to do a latter painting or a watercolour wash could be used later for a good sketch.
